Do this not that

Mistakes that you might be making

Mistake. Heavy window treatments or heavily patterned window treatments.

Solution. Take them down. If you insist on some sort of window covering, try neutral, airy shears on the windows, which allow natural light to penetrate the rooms and make the space feel larger, while still providing that bit of privacy.

Mistake. Miss matched lightbulbs.

Solution. Change them. Make sure that all of the lighting/lightbulbs in your home emit the same type of lighting. If you go with a white light, then make sure every lightbulb in the house is the same white light. Don’t have, stark white warm, white and dim light bulbs all in the same room. Take advantage of adding any accent lighting, like under counter lighting or recessed lighting where appropriate

Mistake. Clutter.

Solution. Remove it. I have talked about clutter numerous times. But it always seems to be a problem. Make sure that only the bear essentials are out on your kitchen and bathroom countertops. Coffee tables, end tables, and the desk in your office need to be as clutter free. Decor is one thing. Clutter is another. Make sure that your cords are hidden away as much as possible. You can get cord clips and cord covers to make them look neater. Make sure that your everyday items like shoes, jackets, purses, backpacks, and sports bags all have a home and can be placed there neatly so that it does not appear that you have a messy home or a home that does not have enough storage for the things that a family needs on a daily basis.

Mistake. Rusty and outdated bathroom and kitchen faucets, hardware, towel bars, trash cans.

Solution. Replace them. These can be replaced fairly inexpensively and installed in minutes. Choose a neutral finish such as a brushed chrome or brushed nickel. The gold features seem to be coming back into style, but not quite there yet. A brushed nickel will be more timeless

Mistake. Neglecting your landscaping, plants, and curb appeal

Solution. Keep your grass neatly mowed, edged, and walkways blown. Continue to water your indoor and outdoor plants watered. Update your house numbers by choosing a stylish font, large size that can be read from the street so that your house can be easily located and choose a color that matches the exterior decor of your home. Make sure that your front door and front porch are as clean and inviting as possible. While your agent is opening the lockbox and the door, those potential buyers are spending a minute or two looking at that front door and front porch. Any debris, rust, peel or faded paint, or spiderwebs will be seen immediately. Make sure that your outdoor lighting is clean, updated, attractive and working.

Mistake. Overwhelming scents

Solution. Have your house smell clean or mildly fragrant with a citrusy or fresh scent. Do not go overboard with your pumpkin spice or fresh cut Christmas tree pine smell. Do not have every room inundated with different fragrances.
